May is the month of birthdays in my family–all a week apart-My mom (May 17), me (May 24) and my dad, today (May 31). Although we were never ones for big celebrations, April and May have always been a time when our family comes together to celebrate the many birthdays in both April and May. Losing my dad and being away from family and friends has made me more reflective this birthday. As much as I miss not being with everyone I am so very grateful all the people in my life and the blessings I have been given. In that reflective spirit I have written a poem:
The Birthday Wish
I wish for peace in a world full of strife.
I wish for joy to counter many moments of sorrow.
I wish for happiness in life in all that anyone chooses to pursue, and
I wish for courage to step outside our comfort zones and explore the unknown.
I wish for health and healthy habits so that we can take many more steps into the future.
I wish for laughter among the tears.
I wish for the ability to notice and appreciate the beauty all around.
I am thankful for all the opportunities and blessings I have been given –
many more than most.
I am thankful for the generosity and support of family and friends who help make my dreams possible.
I am thankful for all the laughter and friendship that has helped make the difficult times easier.
I am thankful for all the mentors along the way who have encouraged me to have confidence in myself.
I am thankful for memories of loved ones who cannot be here to celebrate.
Most of all I wish for love-
to love with all my heart
to be open to receive love from all that choose to give it
and to be open to the unexpected joys that follow.
That is my birthday wish.
