A little taste of Valencian Fallas Tradition

Aside from being home to the original Paella, Valencia is also known for one of the most famous festivals in Spain, Las Fallas. Seeped in traditions, this festival is celebrated in March for about a week in honor of St. Joseph, and is complete with life-sized papermache statues (not sure how else to describe them), parades, fireworks and bonfires. Although the festival is in March, there are a lot of activities and traditions surrounding Las Fallas all year round. Each neighborhood in Valencia selects a Fallera Mayor–a woman elected to represent a Falla figure for the neighborhood. One of my colleagues and friends at Berklee was elected as Falla Mayor this year and I was invited to her presentation to the community. Such a special event that is hard to describe in words. Hopefully these pictures will give you an idea of what it is. Shout out to Martina to for taking most of these wonderful photos and of course the biggest applause for Celia….the best Fallera Mayor! 🙂
